Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a list of what I’m reading, listening to, watching or pondering.
What I’m reading – Nature and Selected Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I know my Franciscan Spirituality delights in this work of selected essays by Emerson. I have had this book on my shelf for many years and it’s one that I pick up often as it reminds me that nature is given to us as gift and we are to live in harmony with it rather than domesticating it. Like a favorite song, I keep reading this short book over and again, and never grow tired of it.
What I’m watching – While on vacation in Alaska, I read “Into the Wild” (see Friday Focus 8/17/18). This past rainy Sunday afternoon I watched “Return to the Wild – The Chris McCandless Story”. I viewed it on Amazon Prime Video; it was produced by PBS. This documentary is told by those who knew him and of his troubled childhood, love for and desperation for a family that was sick and violent. The story also gave me another window into my own quest for silence, solitude and the wilderness.
What causes me to reflect and gaze – Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms: Then and Now has me reflecting on the artful expression of the four freedom’s over the last 7 decades. I only got a short peak at it on Sunday Morning on CBS while getting ready for church. So, latter on, looked it up and it continues to be inspiring, thought-provoking, challenging and I hope, transforming.
Quote I’m pondering – “Death’s a fierce meadowlark: but to die, having made something more equal to the centuries than muscle and bone, is mostly to shed weakness. The mountains are dead stone, the people admire or hate their stature, their insolent quietness. The mountains are not softened or troubled and a few dead men’s thoughts have the same temper.” ~ Chris McCandless – His final goodbye.
