Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a list of what I’m reading, listening to, watching or pondering.
What I’m reading – A wonderful short reflection by my favorite contemporary spiritual author, Fr. Henri Nouwen. He reminds us to Guard Our Souls.
What I’m listening to – One of my clients who is walking in her recovery from childhood trauma shared with me the song Oxygen, by the Christian artist, Steffany Gretzinger. Not only is the song powerful, inspiring and uplifting, but the entire album, Blackout is excellent.
What I’m watching – The powerful voice of woman demanding change. The ugly reality of the cover up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church has left me, like so many of you, brokenhearted. This episode of Raymond Arroyo’s “The World Over on EWTN resonates with truth, admonition and the call for change. The best part is the segment with DR. JANET SMITH, professor of moral theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, and ALEXANDRA DESANCTIS, journalist and staff writer at National Review discuss the Letter to Pope Francis from Catholic Women, why they signed on to it and what answers they hope to receive from Rome.
Watching Part II – To lighten the mood. It’s always fun for me to watch the brown bears hunt for salmon at the Brooks Falls in Alaska's Kamai National Park. Just fun to watch. The last days of their feeding are here, so enjoy until they take a long winter’s nap.
Quote I’m pondering – “The hardest spiritual work in the world is to love the neighbor as the self – to encounter another human being not as someone you can use, change, fix, help, save, enroll, convince or control, but simply as someone who can spring you from the prison of yourself, if you will allow it.” -Barbara Brown Taylor, An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith
Listen in – On Thursday nights from 8-9 PM (cst) I host a program, ‘Brokenhearted’ on Radio Maria.us. You can stream it live if you can’t get it over the airwaves. You can also go to Radio Maria and listen to previously recorded broadcasts of the program.
