Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a list of what I’m enjoying, learning, listening to or pondering.
What I’m reading –
I, Francis by Carlo Carretto is a gem. This is my 5 th or 6 th journey through the inspiring, simple and deeply profound reflections of this masterful spiritual writer. My love for Francis of Assisi always grows and takes on deeper meaning reminding me why I’ve been a lay Franciscan for 34 years!
What I’m listening to –
Why Pius IX Might Be the ‘Most Important Pope’ in Modern Church History. An interesting listen on NPR. He took the first steps toward the modern papacy. Under his direction, the papacy abandoned the political preoccupations and responsibilities imposed by the temporal power in once possessed and concentrated on spiritual and religious issues.
What I’m watching –
“Far Out!” Seeing John Denver in Alaska/ The American Child (1978) recently, takes me back to the first time I viewed it on TV – to memories of my high school days where the dreams and hopes of a life of wonder, adventure, the wilderness, music and a wide world in front of me were birthed. I’ve had the privilege to visit Alaska twice in the last few years and I will go back a few more times, God willing. Denver’s music and the majesty of Alaska are a perfect cocktail that I wish to continue to drink.
Quote I’m pondering –
“Only by solidarity with other people’s suffering can comfortable people be converted. Otherwise we are disconnected from the cross—of the world, of others, of Jesus, and finally of our own necessary participation in the great mystery of dying and rising”. ~ Fr. Richard Rohr
