Friday Focus – June 12, 2020

Hello everybody!

Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus — a smattering of what I’m reading, practicing, listening to, watching, or pondering.

What I’m readingJonathan Wilson-Hartgrove on Prayer, Action, and Unlearning Racism. This article – again a primer, but yet, speaks to me in a strong way to see differently. To see faith through another’s eyes, experience and perspective. I am constantly being challenged in the quest of listening and understanding the needs of those marginalized, judged and dismissed because “they” are different.

What I’m watchingSeinfeld on Hulu. From the beginning, Jane and I are looking for some binge worthy comedy to lighten the energy and intensity of these current days. We never really watched Seinfeld enough over the years to really say we were fans. We are taking the plunge. From the beginning, we’re starting season 1, episode 1.

Powerful songs I’m watching and listening to“The Times They Are A -Changin” written by Bob Dylan and sung here by Peter, Paul and Mary. The important life-challenging messages of music are timeless. This song resonates as true today as it did in the 1960’s 70’s, 80’s, 90’s into the 2000’s to now. Listen to this old song with new ears. Justice is not out of date.

Spiritual Practice of the WeekGo for a Walking Meditation: Spiritual practice doesn’t necessarily have to mean visiting a temple or performing a complex ritual. Walking in a purposeful and conscious way can also become a spiritual practice. It gives a chance to clear the mind and reflect. In fact, religions around the world practice walking meditation. You can use it as an opportunity to take a break from the hustle of bustle and reconnect with yourself.

Sacred Scripture I’m pondering – Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the holy ones greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. II Corininthians 13:11-13

The week’s ridiculous generosity challenge:
The next time you go to the grocery store, fill up a bag or two of food and take it to your local food distribution center. Maybe, make this a monthly practice.

Quote I’m pondering – Spiritual bypassing (the tendency to check out of reality by engaging any of many bullshit belief systems and platitudes on the market today) is alive and well in every community you identify with. ~ Mirabai Starr

Peace and Blessings.
