Friday Focus – July 3, 2020

Hello everybody!

Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus — a smattering of what I’m reading, practicing, listening to, watching, or pondering.

What I’m readingNYT Op-Ed: ‘You want a Confederate monument? My body is a Confederate monument’. If you want to read a very new stunning opinion on racism, read this from Caroline Randall Williams. Combines the emotional power of poetic writing with precise prose that is at the same time excruciatingly painful and brilliantly illuminating. Read this, if you dare. Thanks Jules Arceneaux for sending it to me. If you want to take a deeper more emotional dive, listen to her interview on the podcast ‘into america’. Another look at sexual violence.

What I’m listening toSongs of Conscience and Concern, by Peter, Paul and Mary. Listening to these songs re-forms and informs the messages that are not new, yet they speak a-new to the present day.

What I’m watchingDeath Zone on Amazon tells the tale of 20 elite Nepali climbers who venture into the “Death Zone” of Mount Everest to restore their sacred mountain and contaminated water source of over a billion people.

Spiritual Practice of the Week – A PALM PRAYER
The palm prayer is a simple gesture prayer that can capture the spiritual act of releasing burdens to God and receiving grace and blessing from God. One simply holds their hands out in front of them, faces their palms down for a period of time, and then faces their palms up.
You can pray with words while doing this if you like. For example, with palms facing down, I might pray, “God, I give you to you the anxiety I’m experiencing right now.” With palms facing up, I might pray something like, “God, I receive the peace of your Spirit.”
But you don’t have to use words. You might just welcome a brief moment of internal silence, and hold your hands palms down for a beat, and then turn them up for a beat. Try it. You can even hold your hands under your desk at work.

Sacred Scripture I’m pondering – “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation.” Psalm 62:5-6

The week’s ridiculous generosity challenge:
[I’m going to try and work on this one over the weekend.] Create a generous “auto-responder” (sometimes called an “out of office” message or “vacation auto-reply” message) for your email … full of links, resources, fun videos, answers to commonly asked questions, maybe a complimentary gift, or whatever else you want to include. This is such an easy way to offer people something inspiring, entertaining, helpful (or all of the above!) automatically. They can enjoy the cool stuff … while they await your reply. (Want to see some creative examples? Check this out.)

Quote I’m pondering – “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle”. ~ Steve Jobs

Peace and Blessings.

Dan
