Friday Focus – January 24, 2020

Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a smattering of what I’m reading, listening to, learning, watching or pondering.

What I’m reading – (Squatty Potty got it right!) The Forgotten Art of Squatting Is a Revelation for Bodies Ruined by Sitting by Rosie Spinks. I am desperately working to maintain, if not improve, my mobility and functionality. The practice of squatting and our devolving ideas around it may just in fact have hurt us more than helped us. This seems a lofty goal for me, but one that makes a great deal of sense. I think where I need to make a change, is to just get on the floor more and get back up.

What I’m listening to – Since the early 70’s, I have been drawn deeply to music. One of the first women of music that I was introduced to was Linda Ronstadt. In the last few weeks, I have been re-introduced to her music and introduced to an entire body of work of hers that I never knew about. I share with you a new discovery for me – a delightful album “Lush Life” that she released in 1984. This was the second in a trilogy of jazz albums and was a Grammy Award Nomination.

What I’m watchingFunny Prayer about Getting Old at the Caregiver of the Year Dinner. This 7 minute video is for all of us who have cared for our grandparents or parents, or are in the throngs of old age ourselves. With the timing of a professional comedian, this diminutive “little old lady”, Mary Maxwell, shines a very funny light on the foibles of aging, to the delight of an audience filled with senior-care experts.

Sacred Scripture I’m pondering – What does God ask of us? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. —Micah 6:8

Practicing ridiculous generosity – Behaving generously is a pathway to a richer, fuller life. Behaving generously opens our hearts and minds to the larger picture of gratitude, joy, and living a peace-filled life. In the next several installments of Friday Focus, I will be offering “the week’s ridiculous generosity challenge.” If you don’t like the one I propose, feel free to create your own.

The week’s ridiculous generosity challenge: Put away your smartphone and close down your inbox for one day. Give the world the gift of your undivided, non-digital attention.

Quote I’m pondering – “Spiritual awakening does not leave us immune to the human condition. Quite the opposite, it brings us into the heart of reality. Where we mourn and rage, bow and give thanks. Ache and surrender.” Mirabai Starr
