Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a smattering of what I’m reading, doing, listening to, watching or pondering.
What I’m reading – The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. I am amazed at the scope of life events that create a sense of experienced trauma: Combat, molestation, growing up in a substance abuse home, emotional and physical trauma as well. This book exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal – and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.
What I’m listening to – As an “ole Folkie”, I was first introduced to John Prine by my high school friend (the original parrot head) Kevin Mulvenna. We played a few of John Prine’s songs together and I listened to his albums often to experience the profound simplicity of his lyrics rolled into song. I came across his new album, The Tree of Forgiveness and have found many of John’s songs captivating my thoughts and reflecting on the big questions of life.
Prayer for the New Year – Let Light Shine – A Prayer for the New Year is a simple, short, reflective prayer that focuses on hope, new life and birth.
Quote I’m pondering – “The contemplative life becomes awfully thin and drab…. without thinking explicitly of the Passion of Christ. For His Cross is the source of all our life, and without it prayer dries up and everything goes dead.” ~ Thomas Merton
