Friday Focus – February 21, 2020

Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a smattering of what I’m reading, listening to, learning, watching or pondering.

What I’m readingMark Charles on the Nation’s Selective Amnesia. Stumbling across the writing and speaking videos of Mark Charles a few weeks ago is leaving me very unsettled…. In a good, growing, changing and challenging way. I pray that this journey moves me more to a macro sorrow, repentance and interior conversion of my own heart towards the marginalized and tormented. I remember reading and studying church history in my theology classes and being left unsettled, uncomfortable with how and why our narrative of history and the Doctrine of Discovery seemed in conflict with the Gospel and the life and teachings of Jesus.

What I’m watching and listening toThe Petersens, Gentle on My Mind (cover) – Glen Campbell. There’s a love I have for Bluegrass music and the music of Glen Campbell. This group sounds wonderful and they tie the two together. The Petersens are an award winning bluegrass family band who play in Branson, MO. Thanks, Charles Trementozzi for letting me know about them.

New! Monthly Couple Challenge – Recreate your first date. Take this as literally as you want. Whether it’s going to the actual location of your first date or simply enjoying the same type of cuisine or activity you did that night, pay homage to your first date in some way. Have fun reminiscing about your first impressions of each other.
We’ll do this on February _____________.
We’ll do it again? Yes / No When? _____________
Want to change anything___________________?

Sacred Scripture I’m pondering – “He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me.” Declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 22:16

Practicing ridiculous generosity – Behaving generously is a pathway to a richer, fuller life. Behaving generously opens our hearts and minds to the larger picture of gratitude, joy, and living a peace-filled life.

The week’s ridiculous generosity challenge: Pray with love for someone who is difficult for you to deal with. In union with the Spirit, send them generosity, goodwill, and love. Then, send them a note, text or email letting them know they are in your heartfelt prayers.

Quote I’m pondering – “Compassion is comprised of that capacity to see clearly into the nature of suffering. It is the ability to stand strong and to recognize, I’m not separate from this suffering.” Joan Halifax (Ted talk)

Peace and Blessings.
