Here is your weekly dose of Friday Focus, a smattering of what I’m reading, listening to, learning, watching or pondering.
An excellent Valentine gift for you and your partner – Candace and I are doing our next Hold Me Tight for Christian Couples retreat on Friday and Saturday, March 6 & 7, 2020. Our HMT is small and intimate – only 6 couples attend per retreat. This retreat is for all couples and makes a fantastic Valentine’s gift – one that will last throughout your marriage. Register here and get this Valentine’s day gift offer – $635/couple – an additional $60 off the early registration date. You must register by Sunday night February 16th – 11:59 pm to get this Valentine gift offer.
A podcast I’m listening to – Tim Ferris and Brene’ Brown sit down together and talk about Striving versus Self-Acceptance, Saving Marriages and More. There is so much treasure in this podcast/video. My favorite part starts at 36:28. How to help those resistant to open up the messiness of life. Brene’s response to Tim’s question about “pandora’s box” is brilliantly insightful as she ties it into the topic of midlife.
A TED talk that touched me – Compassion and the true meaning of Empathy, presented by Joan Halifax. A moving, clearly articulated talk of the science and psycho-spiritual dynamic of compassion in the face of suffering. This is one of the best TED talks that I’ve heard. Standing ovation!!!
What I’m watching – You’ll find this on Amazon Video (and probably others). Find Me. An independent award-winning film that is funny, charming, thought-provoking and a gorgeous film. Filmed in Southern Utah and Yellowstone. The journey of exploration is the path to finding that which is buried deep within. I will see this again.
New! Monthly Couple Challenge for February– Recreate your first date. Take this as literally as you want. Whether it’s going to the actual location of your first date or simply enjoying the same type of cuisine or activity you did that night, pay homage to your first date in some way. Have fun reminiscing about your first impressions of each other.
We’ll do this on February _____________.
We’ll do it again? Yes / No When? _____________
Want to change anything___________________?
Sacred Scripture I’m pondering – “I lift my eyes toward the mountains; whence, shall my help come to me? My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Pslam 121:1,2
Practicing ridiculous generosity – Behaving generously is a pathway to a richer, fuller life. Behaving generously opens our hearts and minds to the larger picture of gratitude, joy, and living a peace-filled life. In the next several installments of Friday Focus, I will be offering “the week’s ridiculous generosity challenge.” If you don’t like the one I propose, feel free to create your own.
The week’s ridiculous generosity challenge: Find a Little Free Library near you and donate a book. Can’t find one? Start one.
Quote I’m pondering – I have been pondering this one all week. I know it’s lengthy, but I hope you will get as much out of it as I am. From a Master Spiritual Writer – Henri Nouwen.
“In prayer, God’s presence is never separated from God’s absence and God’s absence is never separated from God’s presence. God’s presence is so much beyond the human experience of being together that it quite easily is perceived as absence. God’s absence, on the other hand, is often so deeply felt that it leads to a new sense of God’s presence…
‘My God, my God, why have you deserted me?’ (Ps 22:1)…When Jesus spoke these words on the cross, total aloneness and full acceptance touched each other. In that moment of complete emptiness all was fulfilled. In that hour of darkness new light was seen. While death was witnessed, life was affirmed. Where God’s absence was most loudly expressed, God’s presence was most profoundly revealed. When God, through the humanity of Jesus, freely chose to share our own most painful experience of divine absence, God became most present to us. It is into this mystery that we enter when we pray.” [REACHING OUT]
Peace and Blessings.
