The Different Types of Psychotherapy Treatments, Explained

types of psychotherapyIf you or someone you love is suffering from a mental illness such as anxiety or depression, then it can be incredibly beneficial to speak to an experienced therapist for treatment. There are multiple types of therapy available, and these different approaches, when used consistently, can really make the difference in a person’s life little by little.

However, it is important to understand exactly what these different types of psychotherapy entail in order to get the most out of your treatment. So here we explain the differences between the multiple varieties in hopes of helping you choose whatever option is best for you.

Client-Centered Therapy

As the name suggests, this method is heavily focused on the client. The therapist will simply let the patient speak and won’t offer a lot of direction or prompts. Rather, they will simply let the patient control the conversation and will follow their lead. This gives the patient flexibility in deciding what they would like to talk about and how they would like their sessions to be run.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The goal of CBT is to treat dysfunctional behavior that can lead to negative behavior. It focuses on the client’s thoughts rather than the client’s personality, as client-centered therapy would. The goal is to change the thought process as a whole.

Humanistic Therapy

This approach will focus on the patient’s ability to make rational decisions. The idea is to have the therapist help their clients change by emphasizing how much they care. During humanistic therapy, the therapist will not focus on the patient’s experiences, but their emotions and decision-making skills.

No matter what types of psychotherapy you choose, know that you will be on your way to making positive decisions about your life and health. But also recognize that therapy requires a lot of time and dedication. For example, the traditional psychotherapy treatment for depression lasts around 10 to 20 weeks, so it is crucial you find a therapist you feel extremely comfortable with.

Don’t put your mental health on hold; call one of our experienced therapists today to get started with changing your life for the better, forever.
