``Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

      Matthew 11:28-30

Marriage counseling is offered to couples seeking to improve their spousal relationship. Couples may be seeking to improve their communication skills, overcome issues related to sexual intimacy, or discover new ways to resolve conflict and differences. Some couples may find themselves on the brink of separation or divorce; seeking ways to repair, restore and heal their relationship. Though the relationship is the focus in Marriage and Couples Counseling, each spouse should also expect to focus on self-improvement and self-awareness.

Couples seek counseling for a number of reasons. It is strongly recommended as soon as discontent arises in the relationship. Studies show however, that on average, couples will not seek counseling until they have been unhappy for six years. And yet, as more time passes without help, the more difficult it may be to change patterns, heal wounds and repair the relationship.

Effective therapy will offer hope and strategies to the couple by addressing many key areas of their relationship. Counselors assist couples to identify the negative patterns in their relationship. They help the couple develop skills and techniques to regulate negative emotions, stay calm and use healthy communication skills to resolve problems and improve intimacy.

Each spouse is required to bring the necessary motivation and dedication for change to the process of counseling. The couple will establish goals with the counselor and each spouse will need to understand his or her role in the relationship and how it affects the whole of the marriage.

After the initial session, the couple will decide on a course of options that meet the needs of the goals agreed upon with their counselor. They will take into account the availability of time and resources to be invested in the repair of the relationship. There is a range of options for couples counseling. Couples can meet for 2-3 hour sessions as well as 1 or 2 day intensives to increase effectiveness and change. Discernment Counseling is offered to those couples on the brink of separation or divorce.

          Depression

Depression is a vague term. Laymen use it to describe a wide spectrum of behavior – anything from a mild mood swing to psychosis. We all fit into that spectrum somewhere and to some extent our degree of depression versus happiness varies from hour to hour and day to day. As psychotherapists, we work with people who are anywhere on that wide spectrum of behavior. Our strong contention is that people who are suffering from a serious clinical depression can find hope there is a way our to of the pain. Depression (without biological causes) is usually treatable with the right kind of therapeutic help. Even depression caused by biological reasons, although not curable, can generally be managed with proper medication and counseling. We can work with your Medical Doctor to help you find peace, joy and contentment in your daily living.

If you think you might be struggling with depression, take the Depression Screening Test. This screening test is intended to be fun and educational, and may help increase your awareness of particular experiences or of particular forms of psychological distress. It is not by itself a tool for diagnosing of any type of health or mental health condition. Please consult a counselor at the Pax Renewal Center or your Medical Doctor for an accurate assessment, diagnosis and proper treatment.

``Dismiss all anxiety from your minds. Present your needs to God in every form of prayer and petitions full of gratitude. Then God’s own peace, which is beyond understanding, will stand guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.``

          Phil 4:6,7

          Anxiety

Both Mental Health and the Word of God point to the fact that anxiety can be either normal or abnormal. Mental Health professionals have long noted that individuals are more efficient and productive when they have some anxiety. However, if the anxiety becomes intense, their efficiency begins to decrease accordingly.

The causes of anxiety are many. It can be the result of unconscious intrapsychic conflicts. In other words, anxiety is usually a fear of looking at the truth about our own thoughts, feelings, and motives. It can come from present-day situational problems. It can come from being anxious about being anxious. It can come from fears of inferiority, poverty, or poor health.

If you think you might be struggling with anxiety, take the Anxiety Screening Test.

Spirituality in the treatment of eating disorders (ED) has become a widely-discussed topic among clinics and centers that specialize in helping ED sufferers. One major reason seems to be a growing number of clients asking for individualized treatment that keeps their belief systems in mind; after all, people cannot simply leave their spiritual selves at the door when they seek relief from eating problems. Spiritual life is innate to many individuals’ self-understanding and identity, and to leave it unaddressed in treatment would leave these clients feeling as if their deepest convictions were pushed to the side. We honor the dignity, value and mystery of every person. Contact us so that we can get you or someone you love the help needed.

Candace is our resident play therapist and she is really good at what she does. Play therapy is a powerful tool for addressing cognitive, behavioral and emotional challenges. Counseling professionals therapeutically use play to help clients better process their experiences and develop more effective strategies for managing their world. Research suggests Play Therapy is an effective mental health approach, regardless of age, gender, or the nature of the problem, and works best when a parent, family member or caretaker is actively involved in the treatment process.

                    • Discernment Couples Counseling

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

                      Matthew 5:9

It’s no surprise to hear that Clergy, religious and other helping professionals are approached by people in marital crisis who are considering divorce. In fact, people are more likely to turn first to a trusted religious or helping professional with whom they already have a relationship than to a therapist or lawyer. The challenge for the religious and helping professional is to provide crisis assistance for a trouble marriage but not attempt to become a long-term marriage counselor for the couple. Sometimes a referral to a marriage counselor is the best option, especially when both spouses are motivated to work on the marriage.

Often, one of the spouses is reluctant to try to save the relationship, while the other spouse is highly motivated to try. Traditional marriage counseling tends to be ineffective because the counselor either expects both parties to work on the relationship—rendering the leaning out spouse, the uncooperative one—or encourages the hopeful spouse to just let go of the marriage—leaving that individual feeling undercut and angry.

Discernment Counseling is a service created after University of Minnesota did some research on the reconciliation interests of divorcing parents. It is brief, focused counseling for individuals and couples who are ambivalent about whether to divorce or work to repair their marriage. The goal is clarity and confidence in the decision, including whether there are avenues for reconciliation that the couple had not yet explored. It is not framed as marriage counseling to improve the relationship.”Leaning out” spouses are not pressured to be better partners at a time in which they are not sure they want to stay married. The decision is framed as whether to continue toward divorce or to carve out a reconciliation period of six months to work hard on saving the marriage, and then make a decision on divorcing or staying married. Discernment counseling has a maximum of five sessions.

When one spouse is leaning out of the marriage and the other is strongly interested in saving it, the counselor works with them separately on their agendas. The leaning out spouse is helped to make a decision that has integrity for self and others, and the leaning in spouse is counseled with a “hopeful spouse” protocol. The goal is for hopeful spouses to bring their best self to this crisis (instead of the worst self which an unwanted divorce often elicits), to use the crisis as a wake up call for self-reflection and constructive personal change, and to neither pursue nor distance from the partner while the partner sorts out a decision. There are two potential positive outcomes from this counseling of the hopeful spouse: either the partner decides to try the reconciliation path or they both continue more constructively on the divorce path.

Melissa is our resident sports counseling/consulting expert and she does a fantastic job. In contrast to sports psychology, sports counseling’s focus is on the athlete’s development as an individual, including personal and clinical issues associated with sport performance. For example, sports counseling assists student-athletes with reducing stress and anxiety, overcoming fear of failure and success, and burn-out. It also addresses interpersonal issues such as family and marital difficulty. In addition, counseling can assist with problem prevention, coping skills, relaxation training, decision-making, life management and career planning, therapeutic strategies, and crisis intervention. Ineffective attempts to deal with stress can result in the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Timely assessments and treatment by sports counselors can provide student-athletes with educational programs and information about drugs and substance abuse treatment. Contact Melissa at our office so that she can assist you or your athlete.
